Eye Surgeon Uses state-of-the-art Technology for Sharper Vision

Professional athletes depend on exceptional vision for their livelihood. So when Florida Panthers star goalie Roberto Luongo looked for an alternative to his contact lenses he consulted Dr. Cory Lessner for LASIK surgery.

Dr. Lessner, a Laser Vision Correction Specialist and Medical Director of Millennium Laser Eye Centers in Sunrise, whose practice is dedicated exclusively to laser vision correction, is no stranger to the world of professional sports. He is the official LASIK team doctor for the Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, Florida Panthers, and Florida Marlins.

With more than 14,000 successful procedures performed to date, Dr. Lessner's honor role includes such names as Jeff Conine, A.J. Burnett, Randy McMichael, Wade Smith and Wally Ogunleye.

"These highly-skilled players have to have excellent vision," says Lessner. "And the fact that so many athletes who depend on their eyesight have had LASIK shows the great confidence they have in the procedure."

Millennium's Web site, www.mleye.com, includes glowing comments written from the dozens of athletes treated there. Luongo writes "Thanks for giving me the best sight in the NHL," months before his record-setting season.

Dr. Lessner said the satisfaction of LASIK patients can be attributed to the advanced technology available today. "The technology is so advanced that 50 percent of my patients undergoing procedures with our newest equipment say they see better than they ever did with contact lenses or glasses."

Dr. Lessner so strongly believes in the greatness of today's technological advances that he was the first physician in the United States to purchase and own an Allegretto WaveLight Excimer Laser system after its approval by the FDA in October 2003. "The Allegretto gives superior treatment because it is five to ten times faster and more accurate than any other laser on the market and this speed translates into outcomes that are even more accurate than the recent advent of custom technology," Dr. Lessner said.

In addition, advances such as IntraLase, which uses a laser in the first step of LASIK instead of a blade, essentially eliminates the possibility of intra-operative complications. The IntraLase is used in combination with Allegretto on about 90 percent of his patients.

"These are very safe technologies, and more and more people are realizing that they don't have to be concerned that they are risking their eyesight," Dr. Lessner said. "This new laser combination has made LASIK available to people whose corneas were too thin or whose pupils too large and were previously not candidates for the procedure."

Dr. Lessner said it is wonderful seeing the difference he has made in the lives of so many. "Every week I treat patients who shed tears of joy after undergoing the procedure. They sit up on the treatment table and say 'I can't believe I can already see.

Lessner encourages people who are in any way tired or frustrated with their glasses and contact lenses to educate themselves about these amazing procedures and "replace fear with knowledge."

Dr. Cory M. Lessner, M.D. earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia in 1987. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and a member of the AMA.
