As the official laser eye surgeon for all the professional sports teams in South Florida, Dr. Cory Lessner always gets invited to the games. Even if he is too busy to attend.
"When time permits, I enjoy going to a Miami Heat or Florida Panther game," Cory said. "Especially knowing that the eye surgery I performed has helped one of the players see better."
A highly skilled eye surgeon, Cory oversees a staff with over 100 years of collective experience in the refractive surgery field. With over 14,000 successful corneal refractive surgeries to his credit, Cory is personally involved with every procedure. He performs approximately 2,500-3,000 procedures a year.
"Vision is extremely important," said Cory who lives with his wife Maria and daughters Sabrina and Amanda. "And glasses and contacts can be a hindrance. Imagine not needing to worry about the inconvenience of wearing contacts or the constraints of glasses. Imagine your morning routine being easier and seeing the world more clearly."
As the official eye surgeon at the Millennium Laser Eye Center in Sunrise, Cory has performed corrective eye surgery on a number of professional athletes including pro baseball players Jeff Conine and A.J. Burnett and Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo.
Cory earned his doctorate in medicine at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia in 1987. Upon receiving his degree, he completed residence training at Tufts N.E. Eye Center in Boston, where he received the Charles Prefer Award for clinical excellence in Opthalmology. He has been named a VISX Star surgeon, placing him in the top five percent of laser surgeons in the country.
His credentials include Board Certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member in good standing of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
He prides himself on staying ahead of the curve on the newest procedures and latest equipment available in the industry. He has also pioneered novel surgical refinement techniques for the improvement of the Lasik procedure and has shared them with his colleagues throughout the United States and abroad.
At the Millennium Laser Eye Center, Cory and his staff offer the most advanced laser corrective and flap technology available in all of South and Central Florida Ð the ultrafast Wavelight Allegretto laser with perfect pulse treatment, and the femtosecond IntraLase laser for uniquely safe and precise corneal flap creation.
Lasik is a fairly simple procedure. While the patient is comfortably reclining, the surgeon creates a micro-thin protective flap, the approximate thickness of three human hairs. This is accomplished by using an extremely precise microsurgical instrument called a microkeratome. The microkeratome has delicate gears that run within tracks on a suction ring which gently glide across the cornea.
The entire Lasik process takes about 15-20 minutes. Most patients experience immediate visual recovery with no discomfort. "Lasik is a highly specialized and advanced technology that is now safer than ever," Cory said. "ItÕs a very simple process and it works."
"I am so confident about the procedures we have available. If I perform surgery on someone, they are going to do well," Cory says.
